Texas Space Commission Awards Grant to Axiom Space, Inc.
Austin, TX - The Texas Space Commission (TSC) announced a Space Exploration & Aeronautics Research Fund (SEARF) grant of up to $5.5 million has been awarded to Axiom Space, Inc. for development of an Orbital Data Center (ODC).
Axiom’s ODC architecture will deploy free-flying computing and data processing units in low-Earth orbit (LEO), establishing a cloud infrastructure. This project intends to accelerate the deployment of Axiom’s initial ODC nodes, with additional capacity intended to be scaled in the future.
The project timeline is two years. The objectives for this grant agreement include:
• Set up multi-cloud environment on initial ODC nodes: September 2025 – August 2027;
• Develop space-hardened, multi-cloud server prototypes: September 2025 – November 2026;
• Connect ODC nodes to high-availability, high-bandwidth networks: September 2025 – August 2027; and
• Deploy and operate the ODC Texas Innovation Program: September 2025 – August 2027.
These milestones will position Axiom to deliver resilient orbital computing infrastructure that supports data-intensive space missions. The SEARF grant will reimburse Axiom for eligible expenditures such as, equipment, research and development, salaries, and other direct costs associated with the project.
